What Is A Makerspace?
What, exactly, is a makerspace? Well, to put it simply, a makerspace is a location that allows for people to collaboratively experiment, design, invent, and so on with various different technologies and tools, with an ultimate goal of learning in the process. Key to this is that this is a group activity done at a specific location mean to facilitate said activity, such as a school or, in our case a library (Makerspace: Makerspace for education, n.d.). A garage may allow a mechanic to tinker to their heart's content on a car, but unless it is done so as a group with a goal of learning, that is not quite a makerspace. The San Diego City Library system offers numerous different types of makerspaces as part of its IDEA Labs program, such as makerspaces for sewing, popsicle stick construction, group art projects, and so on (Upcoming Events, n.d.).
